What is the Unconscious Mind?

The unconscious mind is a term used to describe the part of the mind that operates outside of our conscious awareness. It is the part of the mind that holds our beliefs, values, and memories, and it is the source of many of our behaviors and emotions. While we may not be aware of our unconscious mind, it has a profound impact on our lives. One of the key characteristics of the unconscious mind is that it operates through symbols and metaphors. This is because the unconscious mind is primarily visual and intuitive, rather than logical and linear. It communicates with us through dreams, symbols, and other non-verbal means.

What Makes Journaling So Powerful?

If I had a dollar for every time I've said, "journaling is one of the most underrated tools of personal development", I'd book myself a first-class flight to Tahiti. When we put our thoughts on paper, we take ownership of the feelings and experiences we're sharing. Journaling typically occurs in a private place when we have a quiet moment, allowing us the space to reflect on the thoughts, feelings, and events we're writing about. This powerful combination has the ability unlock things that we've never considered — ideas and beliefs that are held deep within our unconscious minds. A great number of famous people accredit journaling as a key component to their success, including:

  1. Tennis player Serena Williams has credited journaling as a key tool for maintaining her mental focus and improving her performance. She uses her journal to track her progress, set goals, and reflect on her mindset and performance.

  2. Benjamin Franklin kept a daily journal for much of his life, in which he recorded his goals, accomplishments, and personal reflections.

  3. Oprah Winfrey has kept a journal since she was 15 years old, and says it's helped her stay focused and centered throughout her life.

  4. Swimmer Michael Phelps has talked about how he uses journaling to maintain his motivation and focus. He writes down his goals and visualizes himself achieving them, which helps him stay motivated and positive.

  5. Kobe Bryant, the late basketball player was known to be an avid journaler. He used his journal to set goals, track his progress, and reflect on his experiences. He also used his journal to write about his fears and doubts, and to help him maintain a positive mindset.

The Benefits of Journaling

The ability to help us access our unconscious mind is just one of the many powerful benefits of journaling. To give you a better idea of how journaling works, here is a list of some other incredible perks journaling has to offer.

1. Increased Self-Awareness

Journaling can help us to become more self-aware by allowing us to reflect on our experiences. By writing about our emotions and experiences, we can gain better insight into our thought patterns, behaviors, and motivations.

2. Improved Emotional Well-Being

Therapists often recommend journaling as a way to improve mental health because it allows us to better process out emotions and experiences. Writing can be a cathartic and healing process, helping to reduce stress and anxiety, and manage depression. One study found that journaling reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, and hostility, particularly in participants who were already experiencing these ailments.

3. Increased Creativity

Writing down our thoughts and ideas helps to unleash our inner creative potential. Many writers, artists, and creatives credit journaling as a key tool for sparking their creativity and generating new ideas. By allowing themselves to write freely and without judgment, they are able to tap into their imagination and unlock new insights.

4. Better Decision-Making, Memory, and Learning

Journaling can help us to make better decisions by providing a space to consider our options and weigh out the pros and cons. Research has shown that the act of writing by hand can help improve memory and learning. By writing down notes and ideas in a journal, people are able to retain information more effectively and make new connections between ideas.

5. Improved Communication

Journaling can also help us to improve our communication skills. Not only does it help us to practice expressing ourselves in writing, but it also allows us to reflect on the way we communicate with others and identify areas that you want to improve. For instance, journaling about about an argument with a friend may push you to consider how might have expressed your feelings more clearly and calmly. You might realize that you were feeling hurt, defensive, or that you were triggered by an unrelated event from your past. This insight could help you communicate more effectively in the future and avoid similar conflicts.

Tips for Getting Started

If you're interested in using journaling to unlock your unconscious mind, here are some tips to get started:

1. Start With a Clear Intention

Before you begin journaling, take some time to set a clear intention for what you want to achieve. This might involve exploring a specific topic or issue that you've been struggling with, or it might involve simply wanting to gain a deeper understanding of yourself. Whatever your intention, make sure that it is clear and focused.

2. Develop a Consistant Relationship with Your Journal

To get the most out of journaling, it's important to practice regularly and think of it as your intimate confidant. You may also want to consider decorating it with meaningful quotes or images that inspire you, or using a special pen or writing instrument that feels comfortable in your hand and is only used for that purpose.

3. Try Different Techniques

Journaling is a versatile practice that can take many forms. Experiment with different techniques to find what works best for you. Using creative techniques such as drawing, collage, or poetry, may enhance your journaling practice. There are also many writing styles to choose from. Some people prefer free-writing or expressive writing, while others may find structured prompts or exercises more helpful. Stream-of-consciousness is unique style of writing where thoughts are written just sporatically as they appear into the consciousness. If I were to write this blog in stream-of-consciousness style, for example, you'd likely run click away and never come back after reading, "What other tips can I offer? Bright screen, sun shining in. Ooh, cold chill. I should tell them that reflecting on journal entries is totally important! Yawn, eye twitch, stomach growl. Oatmeal sounds nice." Some believe this style offer great insight for understanding our true experience; however, the real point I'm trying to get across is that there's really no right or wrong way to do it.

4. Make Journaling Your Safe Space

Journaling can be an intimate and vulnerable practice, so it’s important to create a safe and welcoming space for yourself. This means finding a private place where you can feel comfortable writing without distractions or interruptions. Don’t worry about grammar, spelling, or sentence structure. The goal is to get your thoughts and feelings down on paper, and to allow yourself to explore your inner world in a safe and supportive way.

Another thing to remember is that it's important to be honest about your feelings and experiences and not to judge them, no matter how difficult or uncomfortable they may feel. This is your opportunity to let your unconscious mind communicate with you, so try writing your feelings down as vividly as possible and be kind and gentle with yourself. Another tip is to keep your journal in a safe place or lock it up so you don't have to worry. This will reduce any temptation to censor your writing in fear that someone may come along read your private thoughts.

5. Reflect on Your Writing

After you've finished writing, take some time to reflect on what you've written. Look for patterns or themes that emerge, and consider what they might mean. Pay particular attention to any symbols or metaphors that come up. These can provide clues about what your unconscious mind is trying to communicate. For example, if you keep dreaming about a specific animal, consider what that animal might symbolize for you.

Going back to review your journal entries over time can help you identify patterns in your behavior and thought processes, and gain a greater sense of self-awareness. I recommend setting aside some time to review your journal periodically to look for patterns or themes in your writing. By regularly engaging in self-reflection, you can cultivate a deeper understanding of yourself and use this knowledge to make positive changes in your life or highlight personal growth and progress.
